Book: How to Use Yoga
How to Use Yoga by Mira Mehta. Southwater, 2006. 96 pages. A superbly illustrated book on how to practice many of the asanas presented in class, including modifications for less flexible individuals. Includes illustrated weekly sequences of poses that increase in challenge over a 10- week period. A great way to build your home practice.




Book: Yoga in Action for Beginners
Yoga in Action for Beginners—A Preliminary Course by Geeta S. Iyengar. YOG, Mumbai, India. 121 pages. Geeta Iyengar, the eldest daughter of B.K.S. Iyengar, teaches at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, Maharastra, India. This book is a preliminary course of asanas and pranayama based on a syllabus taught at the Iyengar yoga institute. An excellent self-study reference for beginning and continuing students to review what is presented in class.


Book: Yoga: The Iyengar Way
Yoga: The Iyengar Way by Silva, Mira & Shyam Mehta. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, NY. 2003. 192 pages. Beautiful photographs introduce yoga asanas, with detailed instructions on how to practice. Additional information on the benefits and philosophy of hatha yoga practice, and weekly practice sequences. The Mehta family has studied extensively with Mr. Iyengar in India. Mira is the Director of the B.K.S. Iyengar yoga school in London, England.



Yoga for Dummies
Yoga for Dummies by Georg Feurstein, Ph.D., and Larry Payne, Ph.D. John Wiley and Sons. 1999. 408 pages. Despite the silly title, this is an excellent overview from two experts on the history, practice, philosophy, and styles of yoga available throughout the United States. Includes the famous "Lists of 10s," ten top-flight sources of information, organizations and institutions dedicated to various yoga styles throughout the country.


Book: Light on Yoga
Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar. Shocken Books, New York, NY. 1976. 544 pages. An encyclopedic presention on the philosophy and practice of hatha yoga asana and pranayama, written by a master practitioner and teacher. Includes written lesson plans for a home practice, and yoga sequences to practice for specific physical and emotional ailments.
